008 - Hand Decorated Vase

Ming Blue with Dark Blue Highlights

Inscribed "Original One Only 1/47"

7" in dia. and 10" tall.

Extremely rare. Offered for sale on eBay in 2002 but reserve not met after bids exceeding $1,000. Is there companion "Adam" piece? We don't know.

Artist mark: CMH Thrown on the wheel and then hand sculpted at Van Briggle Pottery in Colorado Springs, Colorado in January 1947.

Once a year - at Christmas - Van Briggle had their potters make one unusual piece of their choosing. The rare, unfettered freedom of design was their "Christmas gift" to the potters.

Note that the CMH mark is usually dated between 1952 and 1965. The marking anomoly of this piece is unexplained, although it is known that Clem Hull used the CMH incision at Hull Sata Fe Pottery almost 10 years prior, in 1938.

From the collection of Ralph L. Blunt
